License for staging site

i)- I have a production and a staging site, do I have to purchase licenses for both?
2)- Can I use a asterisk to include sub-domains that is *.example.com for the registered site?

No, you should use correct URL

example.com or www.example.com
The serial number is the same for such domain URLs.
